Note to self:
What if I was a food photographer? How could I get into that? How could I learn? Wouldn't that be SO much fun!!?!?
The business card.
Bonjour, mon amies!!! As the art show is growing nearer, I am getting more and more excited! One of my first steps towards preparing for this event is creating new business cards for myself. I haven't made a business card for myself in probably ten years! Yowza! What happened to me? How did I get so far off track from my goals after I graduated college? And what ARE my goals exactly? Back to the task at hand. Here is the front and back of my new business card that I created today:

Raw: Natural Born Artists
Holy exciting news, batman!! I received an email through my etsy account today from a woman looking for submissions for an art show in Denver! I've always, ALWAYS dreamed of having my work up at a gallery or show! (Of course, I had photographs up in galleries in college- but that doesn't count.) This is for real! Here is the link that she sent me: http://www.rawartists.org/photography
It looks like a pretty wild and crazy show, and I'd LOVE to be a part of it. And hopefully I will be! I'll keep you posted! Holy smokes, could my dreams be coming true? This seems way too good to be true. Even if my work doesn't get chosen, it is so thrilling to me to even get an email about it. Ha! (Nerd alert!)
Speaking of nerdery....I made the most absurd vegetable sandwich for my lunch today. I feel like I need to share it's beauty with you all:
Yeah that's right! That puppy was almost 5 inches tall!! Yum!!

Numero Deuce
Step numero uno towards learning how to make some fat stacks as a fine arts photographer on etsy...Purchase this book:
I can't wait to get it in the mail!!! I love ordering stuff online. There's something UBER exciting about getting a package in the mail- even if you know what it is. It's still a nice little wrapped gift all for you, waiting on your doorstep. (I'm SOOOOO nerdy.....)
I hope this book makes me brilliant.... :)

My dream of....living the dream!
Well g'day, mates! I am a single 32 year old woman looking to follow her dreams. FINALLY. Has anyone or anything held me back? Only myself and my own insecurities and fears.
Where do I start?
Well... I started college right after high school having not even the slightest of clues of what I wanted to do with my life. I'd taken a photography class in high school and didn't think too much of it. I went to a small liberal arts college in Michigan because my parents thought it would be a good wholesome school in which to get my education...Not my first choice, of course- which was Michigan State University. My parents knew me well, they knew that I might not find any direction in such a large school and thought I'd find a better route for my life at smaller school, Adrian College. Having switched majors twice already (from physical therapy to art therapy), I began my third semester with a photography class. My teacher seemed to be extremely impressed with my work and told me that I had a real talent. Me?! I did relatively well academically throughout high school, horribly in sports and had never heard the word "talent" and my name included in the same sentence. I figured that this must be the route for me! If I finally found something I'm good at- I'm going to put my all into it. This same teacher suggested I get a portfolio together and apply to a somewhat prestigious art school in Detroit called The College for Creative Studies. (Of course, they are really only well known for producing car designers....but hey! Why not?!) I applied, showed my portfolio and got a pretty decent scholarship with my admission into CCS. I absolutely loved the time I spent at CCS. I loved art history, I loved the drawing classes, I loved the absurd amount of photography classes that I took. Everything about that school inspired me. I really wanted to be an artist. I just didn't know how to transition into making a career out of my photography.
I tried photographing weddings and absolutely hated it. I hated standing in front of everyone taking pictures and trying to get the photographs that the couple would have for a lifetime. It made me so nervous that if I missed their first kiss, or the bride walking down the aisle- and they'd forever remember me in anger...
A few years out of college I found a job that I absolutely fell in love with. I was retouching photographs of cars at a car photography studio. The photographers at the studio shot dozens of cars for press kits, car shows, magazines, etc. Me and another fellow did all of the retouching of the cars before the photos were sent to the clients. We were a helluva team! We rocked out to 80's music and retouched photos until the sun went down. This is one of my favorites that we affectionately called "Death Dawg:"
Unfortunately, the job didn't last as long as I'd hoped, as Chrysler and GM were doing poorly financially and cut back significantly on their photography.
A few months later I received a phone call from a college friend telling me about a photography job at a hospital in Detroit, taking pictures of eyeballs! They trained on the job and after I got certified, made a decent enough amount of money. A few years later, I decided to pack up my bags and head to the hills...or mountains... and got a job doing the same thing in Denver.
I really can't complain, life has dealt me a wonderful hand and I'm incredibly appreciative of where it's taken me. I earn a decent living, get to live in a great apartment, within a two hour drive to the mountains.....but..... I'm not exactly thrilled about going to my job everyday. (But who is, really??) The amount of energy I put into this job is not worth the return. I don't feel appreciated, like I'm just another one of the faceless worker bees doing her duty. I miss the feeling of getting excited to go to work, to do something I loved everyday.
Ophthalmic photography is not my passion. If it were up to me, I'd be at home taking pictures of vegetable and flowers. Sounds bizzare, right?! It sure is, but it's my passion. I'm a vegetarian and am in love with eating fresh fruit and veggies. I find the nature and make up of these foods to be astounding. Through the eyes of a macro lens, it's just incredible how much detail and beauty we throw in our mouths without even taking a second glance. This is going to sound ridiculous, BUT....I want to show the world the beauty in the food we eat everyday. I would love to have my photographs in a gallery someday. I just started my own etsy store which isn't doing very well. I have had one customer, who also happens to be one of my friends. (Wuh wah.)
The point of this blog is for me to document my path to hopefully living my dream of making a living as a fine arts photographer. I'm hoping this blog will motivate me to stop being afraid and to really just GO FOR IT!
So here goes!!! Thanks for reading!!!
